António Guerreiro de Brito is an environmental engineer, currently serving as a Full Professor and Dean of the School of Agriculture (ISA) at the University of Lisbon. His research spans decentralized wastewater treatment, integrated water resources management, and bioenergy, contributing to over a hundred peer-reviewed publications. He actively supports high-impact projects across Europe and Africa, promoting environmental sustainability and innovative solutions in resource management.
Previously, António served as the first Director of Water Resources and Spatial Planning in the Azores and as President of the North River Basin District Administration, where he advanced river basin planning and integrated water resources management. His career began as an engineer in the Azores’ Hydraulics Department, later transitioning to academia at the University of Minho, where he lectured in environmental impact assessment and wastewater treatment. His Ph.D. research focused on anaerobic biofilms and wastewater engineering, and he later earned his Habilitation in Environmental Engineering from NOVA University Lisbon.
In addition to his academic and professional achievements, António has held leadership roles within the Portuguese Association of Engineers and has been a committed advocate for human rights since his university days, where he co-founded the Portuguese Section of Amnesty International.
